Portuguese Gastronomy, Cod “à Brás” Style | Bacalhau à Brás

I think, we Portguese, have to serve the ones that visit Portugal for the first time, cod in other way than just boiled.

Don’t get me wrong; I love simple boiled cod with some boiled potatoes and vegetables, but compared with all the other ways of eating cod, this is, in my opinion, the most boring one.

And if we Portuguese have soooooooo many ways of eating and preparing and serving cod, why not give to know one of the classics of the Portuguese gastronomy, the marvelous Cod “à Brás” Style?

Portuguese Berliner | Bolas de Berlim

Olhá’ boliiiiiiinha…! 

If you hear this, somewhere in some beach of Portugal, go ahead; buy a Bola de Berlim. You won’t regret it!

And what is a Bola de Berlim, you ask? This is something very typical to find in every pastry/bakery in Portugal, and yet, Summer is the season where you see them more. I would love to know who was the first brilliant guy who decided to sell these beauties in the beach. The truth is, they really taste better when eaten by the sea.

Besides the experience of eating Bolas de Berlim in the beach, I would advise you to search them in other places too, as the ones sold in the beach can get over priced.

In other parts of the World, this delicacy is also known as (German) Berliner This version, is filled with a red (strawberry, raspberry, etc.) jam, while the Portuguese version is with a yellow cream – what we call creme pasteleiro.

Chouriço Bread | Pão com Chouriço

My grandma’s chouriço bread was the best. No one in the world could / can make such bread as her. I don’t know if it was her hands, the way she kneaded or something else; the truth is, her chouriço bread was one of a kind.

And I don’t say this because my grandma’s food is better than yours, but because it was for real. When Cantinho de São João existed – a small house where served food and snacks during the weekend in my hometown -, she was one of the cooks and the responsible one for making bread. Everyone loved her bread! When the “restaurant” closed, it was still possible to see people during weekends looking and asking where that famous pão com chouriço was

When she passed away, my mother and aunt were – and still are! – the responsible to make bread in our family reunions. I must admit, they’re good and I like their bread, but it tastes different. Or maybe is just me, that misses my grandmother a lot.
